Giving India’s women equal inheritance rights has increased female foeticide, research says

30.10.18 / New research has found that reforms to Indian inheritance law to give women equal rights to men have led to a rise in female foeticides, a consequence that was unforeseen by legislators.

The study, by academics from King’s College London, the University of Essex and New York University Abu Dhabi, found that the reformed legislation increased son preference, with an increase in foeticide of firstborn girls and a decrease in the likelihood of the second child being a girl, thanks to ultrasound technology that allows sex selection.
