Pakistan’s International Women’s Day marches have caused a furious backlash on social media.
March 8th saw a series of marches taking place across different cities to protest against widespread issues such as discrimination, harassment and honour killings. Marchers carried posters with inscriptions such as “Grow a pair!” written beneath a drawing of two ovaries. Thousands of people have since taken to social media to complain, including celebrities such as actress Veena Malik who said the march had “brought humiliation to women of Pakistan”.
Others have made their feelings known in a more sinister way – at least seven women have reported receiving threats of physical and sexual violence after posting pictures of the posters.
