Pope appoints women as members of the Vatican’s congregation for religious life

09.07.19 / Seven women have been appointed by Pope Francis to be full members of the Vatican’s congregation.

Previously, members of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life – which is responsible for orders and religious congregations, secular institutes and societies of apostolic life – had all been cardinals, bishops and priests.

Breaking with the practice of nominating men only, yesterday’s appointments included six women religious superior generals and one head of a women’s secular institute.
