Documentary about skateboarding girls in Afghanistan won an Oscar
11.02.20 / Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl) won an Oscar for best documentary (short) at the 92nd annual Academy Awards.
The documentary looks into the lives of girls enrolled at the Skateistan School House in Kabul, Afghanistan. The school, which has its own skate park, teaches students age 5 to 17 how to read, write, and skateboard.
“This movie is my love letter to the brave girls of that country,” said the documentary’s director, Carol Dysinger. “They teach girls courage, to raise your hand, to say I am here, I have something to say and I’m going to take that ramp, don’t try to stop me.”
