Nasa plans to land the first woman on the Moon by 2024
The US space agency Nasa will send a man and a woman to the Moon by 2024, in the first landing with humans since the Apollo lunar mission in 1972.
Nasa administrator Jim Bridenstine told CNN in 2019 that the first woman astronaut to walk on the Moon in 2024 would be someone already in the astronaut corps, and “who has been proven, somebody who has flown, somebody who has been on the International Space Station already”.
Earlier this year, five women have graduated and joined the 12 active NASA women astronauts. It is unclear whether they can fulfil the criteria in time to fly on the first landing mission in 2024.
