In the UAE honour killings are now treated as murders
Honour killings in the United Arab Emirates will now be treated by the courts as murder cases, the government said on Saturday.
The crimes involve the killing of women who have been perceived by family members to have damaged their “honour”, and include fraternising with men, eloping or any transgression of conservative values.
Lenient penalties for such crimes will now be cancelled, showing the UAE’s commitment to protect women’s rights reported the Emirates News Agency.
The changes are part of a raft of reforms that will also see alcohol decriminalised.
