Annita Demetriou becomes Cyprus’ first female parliamentary speaker
Annita Demetriou was elected speaker at the Cypriot parliament on Thursday, the first woman ever voted to the post. As speaker of the House of Representatives, Demetriou holds the country’s most powerful political position after the president.
A member of the governing conservative Democratic Rally party, Demetriou served in a senior legislative position as parliamentary secretary for the last five years, and is considered one of her party’s most successful politicians.
“What’s most important is that a strong message is being sent out to all women of Cyprus, to all citizens of Cyprus, that women can and must strive for such positions because they deserve them,” said Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades.
