On this day in 1893 women voted in a national election for the first time, in the New Zealand general election. On September 19 New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world to grant all women the right to vote when the governor Lord Glasgow signed a new Electoral Act into law. With just six weeks to enrol for the general election, 84% of women registered, of which two-thirds voted.
