Pashtana Durrani is an Afghan womens’ and human

Pashtana Durrani is an Afghan womens’ and human rights activist and the founder of LEARN, a non-profit organisation that provides education to girls in Afghanistan who cannot attend school.

Her new book, 'Last to Eat, Last to Learn', documents the struggles, but most importantly, the determination and potential of young women and girls living in Afghanistan and conflict zones around the world.

Durrani's story begins in an Afghan refugee camp in Pakistan, where she was raised. Here her father established a community school for girls, something that left a lasting impression on her. When she had the opportunity to study in Oxford, against all odds she chose to go to Afghanistan, where in 2018 she set up LEARN.

Focusing on STEM subjects, LEARN provides free online courses in Pashto and Dari. To date more than 7,000 Afghan children and teenagers have been able to access lessons in biophysics, chemistry, graphic design, website development and coding through the organisation.

Among LEARN's many initiatives is the distribution of solar-powered, preloaded tablets to facilitate learning in regions with limited access to traditional educational resources.

Speaking to NADJA in 2022, Durrani said: "We have schools in different regions of Afghanistan. We teach girls skills like digital literacy and graphic design but also we are making sure that we teach them school subjects like biophysics and chemistry, which are not accessible right now.

"There might be peace one day and I will be able to return home. But if I am not here anymore, I think these girls will be the next leaders of Afghanistan. Unlike in western countries where everyone is educated or at least can read, education in our society is such a big privilege. If just one hundred girls in each province are given this privilege, I think they might change the world."

Zahra Nader, editor-in-chief of the women-led newsroom @zantimes_, has created a powerful documentary capturing women's acts of resistance in Afghanistan.

The two-part film shows the different ways women are standing up to the Taliban, from street protests to secret schools for girls.

Part 1 tells the story of Zahra Mohammadi and Rishmin Joyanda, who describe how their protests were met with gunfire, electric batons, pepper spray and tear gas. However despite facing violence and imprisonment, they have continued to defy the Taliban's attempts to silence them.

Nader, who is based in Canada, spoke to us about her hope that the film will inspire people worldwide to take meaningful action. “Ask representatives and the people in power in your country to take action,” she urges. “Because what's happening in Afghanistan is not about women's rights in Afghanistan alone: it's about women's rights everywhere. It sets the standard for what could be denied to women. There will be nothing that the world can do to reverse that. And that's scary because what's happening in Afghanistan could happen in any other country. And the world is tolerating it.”

At least 9,000 women have been killed in Gaza sinc

At least 9,000 women have been killed in Gaza since October 2023. Every day the war in Gaza continues at the current rate, an average of 63 women will continue to be killed, leaving families shattered and children without protection.

These are the latest figures collected by @unwomen, although they are likely to be an underestimate as many more women are reported to be dead under the rubble.

Meanwhile the region’s food production systems have collapsed, and the strict blockade on vital resources means that only very limited quantities of water and essential supplies are reaching people.

The lack of food has forced people to scavenge under rubble for sustenance, while pregnant and lactating mothers face heightened risks of malnutrition.

UN agencies have warned that famine is “almost inevitable” unless aid is scaled up immediately.
