About NADJA

RETHINK THE NEWS

Do you think news should empower, inspire and spark interesting conversations?

Welcome to NADJA.

NADJA is a digital news platform for the curious minds looking for a fresh perspective on global events and who, like us, believe women play an active role in shaping our world and our future, and deserve to have their voices heard.

Our aim is to bring you bold, riveting, untold stories of women who are defying conventions, crushing stereotypes and leading in their fields. Stories that will make you rethink the world, and rethink the news.

OUR STORY

Be the change that you wish to see in the world, Mahatma Gandhi said.

Frustrated by the way women are portrayed in the news and the lack of strong, smart, incredible women stories, former BBC colleagues and friends Alia Chebbab and Leila Hawkins decided to take the matter into their own hands. And so, in 2016, NADJA was born.

The idea is simple. Instead of competing with other outlets on breaking news – and becoming yet another traditional news website – we are on a mission to report on the richness of women’s experiences and opinions, focusing on change-makers and trailblazers. We wish to smash common assumptions and explore different views on the world around us – and at the same time contribute to a greater and fairer representation of women in news. Because as Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie put it:

“The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.”

WHY THE NAME NADJA?

She told me her name, the one she had chosen for herself: ‘Nadja, because in Russian it’s the beginning of the world hope, and because it’s only the beginning.’

Our name is inspired by the title character of the novel NADJA, written by French author Andre Breton. In our broad understanding of the character, Nadja is a free spirited woman with a different vision of reality, one that shatters others’ view of the world.
