On this day in 1987, the Church of England said ‘yes’ to women priests


On this day in 1987, the Church of England’s General Synod voted to prepare legislation for the ordination of women priests, after debating the issue for 10 years. Sister Carol, a nun from Worcestershire, told those present during the vote: “Am I called to walk tall in society and to walk small in the Church?”.

The first female priest was ordained in Bristol in March 1994.
