On this day in 1811 the first ever recorded golf tournament for women was held. It took place in Musselburgh, Scotland, and the participants were local fishermen’s wives. Women had been playing golf since the 1500s – Mary Queen of Scots, who ruled Scotland from 1542 to 1567, is noted as the first woman to regularly play golf.
