Climate justice campaigner Dr Jane McCarthy will c Climate justice campaigner Dr Jane McCarthy will continue to not pay her council tax in attempts to stop the local authority from financing fossil fuels, despite a court order issued for Buckinghamshire Council, in England.

"I cannot hand over money that is being invested in the destruction of our beautiful planet, creating incredible harm and climate injustice and appalling consequences for future generations," McCarthy said. "I have been prepared for this outcome, and I’m considering my next steps. I intend to continue with my council tax strike until Buckinghamshire Council show they are seriously engaged with the urgent need to change direction and stop risking public money by investing in the past. Let’s build a better world by investing in a positive future.”

For the last four years activists from the county in the south east of England have been withholding their council taxes in support of the Council Tax Strike, a campaign to urge the council to move its pension fund investments out of Barclays Bank, known for lending money to fossil fuel companies. According to research, pension funds have invested £128 billion in fossil fuels, the equivalent of almost £2,000 for every person in the UK.

Campaigners in Buckinghamshire have said that councillors are failing to engage transparently with their concerns. An online petition urging the pension fund to stop investing in fossil fuels has gained almost 1200 signatures, along with endorsement from more than 10 local organisations.

Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Greece, Iceland, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain and Sweden as well as Germany and the Netherlands are the nations offering full legal equal rights for men and women according to a recent research by the World Bank.

The data was compiled through surveys with more than 2,000 experts in legislation working locally in family, labour, and violence against women. The research also collected texts related to relevant laws and compared these to the survey responses for accuracy.

In some regions measured in the report, more than 1,500 reforms would be necessary to reach substantial legal gender equality. However, there is no guarantee that legislation provides full equality, guarantees women’s safety or fully eradicates discrimination based on gender.

In France for example, of the people surveyed by the High Council for Equality, 80% said that existing laws that are meant to address domestic violence are poorly enforced and insufficient.

The majority of people in western Europe and the U The majority of people in western Europe and the US don’t understand what the concept of feminism is, a recent survey by pollsters YouGov revealed.

Respondents in seven different countries were randomly asked one of three questions to determine whether or not they identify as feminist. When asked directly “are you a feminist?”, less than half said that they are.

Yet when another group of respondents was asked the same question in conjunction with the definition of feminism (that men and women should have equal rights and status in society), between 45% and 77% of respondents in that group said they are feminists.

We have to wonder what the respondents believe the term “feminism” actually means. And moreover, how its meaning has become so widely misunderstood.

Since the beginning of 2023, more than 60,000 Soma Since the beginning of 2023, more than 60,000 Somalis, mainly women and children, have fled to Ethiopia to escape clashes and insecurity, the UNHCR recently announced.

Ethiopia is one of the largest refugee hosting countries in Africa, with more than 900,000 refugees and asylum seekers, and 4.2 million internally displaced people. In 2019, the government passed a historic law, hailed by the UN as one of the most progressive pieces of legislation in the continent. The 2019 proclamation allows refugees to get work permits, drivers’ licences, open bank accounts and access primary education - as long as they fulfil some requirements, which limits their access to some jobs.

“It’s a waste for the government not to give them meaningful jobs – jobs that get them the income they deserve, and that resonates with what they learned,” says activist Eden Tadesse (@indothopian)

“A lot of the refugees who are fleeing their countries are extremely talented, with a technical or academic background,” she explains. “You can’t expect them to then be a bus driver or the guy at the hotel who opens your door. In my opinion, it’s very demeaning because they are losing out on so much knowledge. And the host government itself is losing out on great potential.”

“Refugees are resilient, hardworking people who you would be lucky to have in your country. You know that this person has gone through the worst experience – that hopefully you will never go through – to reach this destination. They’ve been through hell. And you could help them regain their dignity in their host communities.”
