On this day in 2009, Rose Francine Rogombé was sworn in as interim President of Gabon, becoming the first woman to hold the position. Rogombé, initially a magistrate, previously served as Secretary of State for the Advancement of Women’s and Human Rights. Elected president of the Senate in February 2009, she constitutionally succeeded President Omar Bongo after his death. After her interim presidency ended in October 2009, she returned to her role as president of the Senate.
