On this day in 1990, Ertha Pascal-Trouillot became Haiti’s first female president

On this day in 1990, Ertha Pascal-Trouillot made history by becoming Haiti’s first female president. Before this she was Haiti’s first female judge and Supreme Court member. She became the provisional head of state following a revolt that overthrew the existing government. Pascal-Trouillot coordinated the country’s transition to democracy, and oversaw Haiti’s first free elections on December 16, 1990.
