On this day in 1867, abolitionist Sojourner Truth addressed the American Equal Rights Association, advocating for equal rights for Black women

On this day in 1867, Sojourner Truth addressed the American Equal Rights Association, advocating for equal rights for Black women. Born into slavery, she escaped to freedom in 1826 and from then on, dedicated her life to abolitionism and the fight for civil rights. She became one of the world’s best-known human rights defenders.

In 1922, American astronomer Annie Jump Cannon’s stellar classification system was formally adopted by the International Astronomical Union, which is still used today with only minor changes. Cannon was one of the “Harvard Computers”, who were recruited to study spectrographs of stars photographed with the observatory telescope, classify, and catalogue them.
