On this day in 2012, Cuban Bertha Soler and dozens of Ladies in White activists were arrested in Havana, while marching for the release of political prisoners. They were apprehended after deviating from the authorised route of their weekly Sunday march in the Cuban capital, and they were released later that day. The Ladies in White comprises mainly of the wives and mothers of 75 intellectuals, activists and independent journalists jailed in a notorious crackdown on dissent. All have since been freed, and many have gone into exile, but the group, led by Soler, has continued its weekly marches, dressed in white clothing.
