On this day in 1985, Libby Riddles became the first woman to win the trans-Alaska Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Called “the last great race on Earth,” the dog-pulling sled race covers more than 1,100 miles against the rugged Alaskan wilderness, from Anchorage in the south to Nome on the western Bering Sea. Riddles raced with a thirteen-dog team through debilitating blizzards in 18 days, 20 minutes, and 17 seconds. In 2007, her victory was inducted as a “Hall of Fame Moment” into the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame.
