On this day in 2019, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced a ban on military style semi-automatics and assault rifles, a week after 50 people were killed during the Christchurch terrorist attacks. Ardern described it as “the worst act of terrorism on our shores,” stating “Our history changed forever. Now, our laws will too.” The law was passed in April and was supported by all but one of Parliament’s 120 lawmakers.
